Sometime early the next morning, I opened my eyes and at once realized I’d fallen asleep on the sofa, curled up in a ball under a thin blanket.

When I looked around I spotted Paolo asleep on the floor, also covered with a blanket, while Tenchi and Sergio slept on the bed with the Princess Queen lying between them, her head resting on Sergio’s shoulder while he slept on his back. Tenchi was spooning her, with his hand resting on her breasts.

This was not a good scene. One of us could have stayed in her room for protection, but the others should have left.

From the way Sergio and Tenchi were sleeping with her, I had the sneaking feeling they were truly falling in love with her. I had to admit, she was pulling on my heartstrings, but where could it lead? Nowhere. There were four of us, and we all wanted to be with her, but we all knew, in the long term that would not be possible. And even if one of us won her affections, how could the others possibly cope with having to let her go?

No. We needed to guard our hearts, and from the way Sergio and Tenchi were cuddling with her, they appeared to have already lost the battle.

I pulled on my clothes, then reached over and shook Sergio awake. As soon as I touched him, he opened his eyes and slowly slipped out of bed, careful not to wake the sleeping beauty.

He slipped into some of his clothes and we walked out of the room together, closing the door behind us.

“What the fuck are you thinking?” I asked as soon as the door clicked shut.

“About what?” he asked, sleep still heavy in his throat.

“About sleeping with Charlotte? About spending the night in her bed? You know that kind of shit can only lead to trouble.”

“If you noticed, Tenchi was also in bed with us. Nothing happened, if that’s what you mean. We were all too tired.”

“That’s not what I’m talking about,” I told him, knowing perfectly well I shouldn’t have to spell it out to him. He should already know that sleeping with her and wanting to wake up with her was not a good idea.

“Then what the hell do you mean?” he asked as we headed to his room at the end of the hallway. We could hear the staff already working in the house. They started at six a.m. every morning; even on the weekends or when the family was away, the staff still came in and worked.

“You’re falling in love with her,” I said in a hushed voice, not wanting anyone to hear. “Admit it.”

“We all love her. That’s not news,” he said, rubbing his stubbly chin.

“Yes. we all love her. She’s our Princess Queen, but you’re falling in love with her. There’s a big difference. I think Tenchi is falling as well. This can’t happen. Everything could change tomorrow when that declaration is read. Then what will we do?”

“We’ll adjust accordingly, and I’m not falling in love with her .
